Cool Roofs, Cooler Cities: Neto Group’s Paint Innovation Combats Urban Heat

A team led by Professor Chiara Neto, with Dr Ming Chiu as lead researcher, has developed an innovative roof-coating paint that can reduce surface temperatures by up to 6 °C on hot days. The coating reflects 96% of solar radiation and emits heat directly to the sky, while also harvesting atmospheric moisture, collecting nearly 400 ml of water per square metre per day. This affordable, water-based paint offers a scalable solution to mitigate indoor overheating and the urban heat-island effect.
